Birmingham Student Studio lets

Unihousing are one of the best student landlords that are based in the student village of Selly Oak. They have modern, well furnished and reasonably priced properties, which range from studios to houses.

A Studio to let in Selly Oak is perfect for those looking to spend their time at University independently. A student studio can provide you with enough room for study, relaxation and for small social events. Studios are a small type of accommodation, but you should have plenty of room for whatever plans you have. There’ll be enough room for a movie night with friends, group studying or pre-drinks.

Living independently can also provide you with other benefits. For instance, you won’t have to clean up any of your housemates’ mess. Another benefit is that because they are smaller than a normal house, you don’t have as large a space to clean. It also means that you can continue watching your favourite T.V. show whilst you make a drink.

All of our student studio lets can be found within walking distance of the University of Birmingham Edgbaston campus. Not only this, other things that are convenient about living in a Unihousing studio is that there are plenty of amenities close by, including take-away restaurants, pubs, bars and supermarkets. You can also find frequent bus and train links into the city centre, where you’ll have an even greater choice of attractions and shops on the city High Street, including the Bull Ring, Museum and Art Gallery.

All of Unihousing’s studio lets come fully furnished and fitted, with good sized living areas, modern bath / shower rooms and a modern kitchen. Furnishings and fittings include a desk, sofa, flat screen TV, chairs, dining table, microwave, oven and inbuilt stoves. A studio let will provide you with plenty of space, even for having some friends visit.

You can browse a selection of Unihousing’s upcoming studio developments on our website. We have a number of studios to let that are being built for September / October. Although we can’t provide a viewing for these properties, we can show you the location and other similar student lets. Give us a call, and let us know what kind of property you’re looking for. Independent living: Studios vs single bedroom apartments

The idea of living with other people during your time as a student is one that varies in appeal between different people. Some may like the idea of having a roommate or housemates whilst they’re studying, whereas others may like the idea less, due to concerns over how messy, noisy or generally difficult to live with a roommate or housemates could be.

If living with other people is something that doesn’t sound enjoyable to you, it could be time to start looking at independent accommodation. Living alone does bring some new problems however, including what sort of property is best suited for your needs: a studio, or a single bedroom apartment.

Both types of properties have their own advantages and disadvantages, choosing one or the other is very often a personal decision. With this in mind, here are a few factors to consider when choosing your ideal property.

Price

Most likely the biggest consideration when finding your accommodation, due to the limited amount of money a student has. In almost all scenarios studios are going to be less expensive than a single bedroom apartment. This varies depending on your location, with places like London being one of the most expensive places to live in the UK.

The price difference generally isn’t huge, and actually makes the extra space from a single bedroom apartment look that much more appealing. For those on a strict budget however, a studio will be the best choice.

Floor Plan

The floor plan describes the layout of the property, and is an important consideration. The layout of a studio is often very simplistic. You’ll have a single room for your living area, kitchen and bedroom, and a separate room for your bathroom.

Single bedroom apartments are generally much different, as they will likely be separated into different rooms. You may find properties that either don’t fit into one of these categories, or that are similar to both. This varies depending on your location.

Size

Size is purely dependent on the property itself. You can find huge studios and tiny single bedroom apartments, or vice versa. Despite this, a single bedroom apartment will often require more furnishings, due to the fact it has separate rooms. If you don’t own that much furniture, then a studio is a better choice for you.

Social Life

Whilst size may or may not be a concern, a studio does not offer a great way of having friends around for social meetings, such as game or film nights, unless you’re okay with having friends sat on your bed and having your personal belongings out in the open. For this reason, the separate rooms that a single bedroom apartment provides can be much better for social gatherings.

Storage

Again, this may vary between properties, but in general single bedroom apartments have more storage than studios. Although you might find studios that have more storage units, an apartment’s multiple rooms offer other methods of storage. As a general rule, if you think you have a lot to store, a single bedroom apartment is more likely to be for you.

Which is correct?

This really comes down to your own preferences and requirements for your accommodation. However, we recommend you look at a variety of different properties in your area, as you never know what you might find. It’s entirely possible that you find something you love, even if you were not originally interested in it.

Unihousing has a large range of different properties available, from studio apartments to houses. We’re certain we can find a property that’s ideal for you. Give us a call or visit our website to book a viewing.

Landlords vs Letting Agents

As a student looking for accommodation, it’s almost impossible not to stumble across the terms of landlord and letting agent. But what exactly do these terms mean? And how will renting a property from one be better than renting from the other? Here, we’ll cover what both terms mean and the comparative benefits of both. We’ll also cover why Unihousing is unique in the student property lets market.

Landlords

The owner of a rental property is referred to as the landlord. Landlords are required to do several things by law, including providing you with a contract, keeping the property in good condition and ensuring it passes necessary safety checks, carry out any required repairs and keep your deposit for the property safe by using an approved deposit protection scheme. They must give at least one month’s notice before asking you to leave the property and they also must give you warning before entering the property.

When renting a property with the landlord, you will be paying your rent directly to them, and all contact for things such as repairs, and any other questions or problems will be directed towards the landlord. It’s very important to pay the landlord your rent on time and to follow the rules of your contract. Failure to do so could lead to eviction from the property.

Letting Agents

Letting agents are companies used by landlords for help with the advertising, renting and managing of their properties. They normally have a large number of properties from several different landlords to look after. You can find a list of their advertised properties both on their website and in their office. Letting agents will normally create a contract between the landlord and tenants.

Renting through a letting agent means that you will first pay your rent to them, and they will pass it onto the landlord. This applies to communication as well, any problems or questions, including maintenance or repair requests will be directed towards the letting agents, who will then pass this onto the landlord. Sometimes a letting agent will have their own maintenance team who can carry out any repairs.

Which is Better?

All things considered there aren’t a huge number of differences between renting from one or the other. The landlord has legal obligations over deposits, contracts, safety and repairs of a property, and this doesn’t change when using a letting agency.

Sometimes it can be cheaper to directly rent from the landlord, due to admin fees from the letting agency. However, agencies are generally easier to contact when you have a problem, as you’ll often be given an out of hours emergency numbers, or you can visit their office.

Why Unihousing is Unique

Unihousing is unique in that it doesn’t fit into either of these terms. On the surface, Unihousing appears as a letting agency, but they actually own all of their properties. This means that they can provide all the benefits of both a landlord and an agency, including affordable and competitive prices on their properties.

Unihousing owns a large range of properties, from houses to studios, we’re sure that you’ll find the right property for you. Call us or visit our website to book a viewing for your ideal property today.

Studios vs Flats

If you’re a student looking for accommodation for your next academic year, you may be surprised to find lots of different types of accommodation to choose from. In this blog we’ll be looking at Studios and Flats, their advantages and disadvantages and why you’d choose to live independently.

Comparisons

The main advantages that living in a studio provides are independence and convenience. In a
studio, you’ll either be living on your own or with a partner, so you don’t have to share your living areas with house mates that are messy or inconsiderate. However, it does also mean that you are responsible for all the cleaning and washing-up. Luckily, studios are designed for either one or two people so the areas you need to clean are of an ideal size.

Studios are also very convenient, everything you need fits into one room in an area that’s ideal for a student that’s living independently. You won’t have to miss any of your favourite show when cooking yourself a meal or getting a drink. Unihousing’s studio lets in Selly Oak also come fully fitted and furnished, meaning you can move right in with no hassle.

The benefits of a flat are much the same as a studio, however the difference is that flats come as separate rooms instead of one all-purpose room. This provides more privacy for when you have visitors, and also suits some people better than living in one single room. While it may lack some of the convenience that a studio offers, it still provides a great sense of independence.

Why choose to live independently

Living independently is a choice that may not be right for everyone, but there are a lot of advantages to living either on your own or with a partner. We’ve already covered dealing with housemates and cleaning, but having your own space to relax, study and organise can be a great experience whilst you’re studying at University.

Having to organise yourself is a great life skill, and one that can truly be honed in an independent property. Both studying at University and having the experience of living independently will provide a great set of skills for your future. Of course, your time as a student should be fun, so you’ll have your own space for pre-drinks with your friends or having movie nights.

Conclusion

Studios and Flats are both great for those who’re looking for independence while they are studying at University. However, after that it comes down to personal preference on how they want the layout of the property to be. If they’re looking for more privacy than convenience then a flat would be more suitable, but for those who want the most convenient way to live during their studies, a studio is ideal.

Shown below are some of the last remaining of Unihousing’s Selly oak studios and flats. If you want to view the full list of available accommodation, or book a viewing, you can do so on our website. Contact us today and we can help you find and book a viewing for your ideal property.
