Looking ahead to the forthcoming academic year, only two things are guaranteed: lots of work and lots of parties! Before we start any preparations for those however, it is absolutely vital that you make all the necessary
arrangements in terms of your accommodation. Apart from the obvious fact that
students need a place to live as they make their way through their university
years, having somewhere to live that you feel suits you is crucial to your
well-being. The reason for this is, quite simply, that if you are based in
accommodation that is not pleasant or doesn’t meet your needs, you are less
likely to feel content. This can cause you to have a very negative student experience, affecting your academic success as well.
Selly Oak based registered landlord Unihousing offer a range of studios that are more than capable of
providing a high-standard living experience for their tenants. With bills and
internet included in the rent for each studio and boasting the kind of
furnishings that go towards great student living, Unihousing studios and professional lets are a fine
option for anyone seeking Birmingham student housing. Situated in the
convenient and stimulating town of Selly Oak, these lets are ideal for students at the University of Birmingham.
Aside from being the home of your university, Birmingham is
an exciting place to be as there are a variety of activities to enjoy there.
Many of these can be discovered in the city centre. So read on and learn about
the kind of fun you could be having between your hours of studying.
October
After you have spent September settling in and getting to know
people, October begins, and in Birmingham that means the Oxjam Music Festival,
the Birmingham Comedy Festival and the Birmingham Black International Film
Festival.
Oxjam:
Run through the international charity Oxfam,
the Oxjam Music Festival is a vibrant platform for showcasing a whole range of
local music talent. This means some excellent sounds for you, and to make
matters even better, the festival will raise funds to help eradicate poverty
and the suffering it causes around the world.
Birmingham Comedy Festival:
Lighten up with a few
laughs and have a hilarious night-out with friends with the Birmingham Comedy
Festival. In existence from 2001, this 10 day festival will be host to a long
list of laughter professionals, including Matt Lucas, Henning Wehn and Phill
Jupitus.
Birmingham Black International Film Festival:
Be
engaged by the offerings from a selection of independent filmmakers who are
sure to make an impression on you. Also incorporating theatre and music, the
Birmingham Black International Film Festival will inspire and delight film
aficionados and just about anyone looking for something culturally and
artistically stimulating in the city.
November
As we go into November, the fun for Birmingham students
doesn’t stop.
WWE Live:
For all the wrestling fans out there,
WWE making its presence felt at the Barclaycard Arena will surely be a cause
for celebration. This is your chance to see the stars in the flesh, giving the
kind of performances only they can in front of a roaring live crowd.
The Silver Screen:
Birmingham is home to a handful of
multiplex cinemas. So from large scale blockbusters to Academy Award winners,
there’s no shortage of choice. However, for something with more of a unique
feel there’s the Electric Cinema, the oldest working cinema in the country, and
one that offers more alternative viewing options. November in Birmingham also
sees the opening of another independent cinema- the Mockingbird Cinema and
Kitchen. Based in the Custard Factory, Digbeth, this 100- seat cinema will
screen a diversity of films and will keep patrons tummies happy too, by serving
splendid Southern American inspired cuisine.
Birmingham Frankfurt Christmas Market and Craft Fair:
You may have heard of the Birmingham Frankfurt Christmas Market and Craft Fair
already. It really is hard to explain through words the appeal that it
possesses. A terrific way to get the Christmas season started, this food and
craft laden part of the Birmingham winter calendar is also just a great place
to meet friends for something to drink and a really tasty bite to eat.
December
By December, the Birmingham Frankfurt Christmas Market
and Craft Fair will be in full swing, perfect for getting into the
Christmas spirit. If you are looking for other things to do during this month
though, the Pizza and Prosecco Festival may just attract your attention.
Yet another opportunity to fill your stomach, the Pizza and Prosecco Festival
stops in Birmingham during its nationwide tour on 16th December.
Enjoy a mouthful of delicious fresh pizza accompanied by a glass of Prosecco
whilst you enjoying listening to the live music for an all-round superb social
event.
Activities ideal for Birmingham students continue into the
New Year as January sees such scintillating sporting events as the Basketball
Cup Finals at the Barclaycard Arena as well as the Arenacross at the
Genting Arena- a breathtaking blend of Indoor Motorcross racing and Freestyle
Motorcross along with additional visual and aural thrills.
