Hobbies for Birmingham Students

You may not have already realised this-especially if you are not starting as a student in Birmingham until the next academic year- but Birmingham is a great place for pursuing hobbies and things of interest. It's also great for discovering new hobbies and interests! Looking ahead to your coming student year, pursuing these hobbies could be just what you need to give you an enjoyable break from all of the studying, in addition to helping you make new friends and build confidence.

Sports
If you are purely a spectator of sports, then Birmingham is the place to be. Home to a number of football teams, there is ample opportunity to catch a game here, and there's more here than just football. Athletics, for example, is a big part of the city's sports scene, a glimpse of which can be caught during one of the various athletic events held at places like Alexander stadium at various points within the year. You will also discover the Nature Valley Classic Tennis Tournament in Brum which takes place at the Edgbaston Priory Club, which is right by England's famous Edgbaston Cricket Ground- a historic venue where you will have the chance to see a selection of top-notch matches being played.

But if you're an active individual who likes to get involved in sports directly, you'll like Birmingham as well. From having a kick-about with your mates at one of the many parks dotted around the city to a whole range of sporting activities at Birmingham Sports Centre which includes a climbing wall which you can have a go at for a special student taster session price of just £6! With swimming baths, go-karting tracks and other sports facilities scattered across the city, there is no doubt that if playing sport is what you like to do in your spare time or simply want to try being more active and have fun whilst doing it, that Birmingham is definitely good for you.

Music

Whether you are an avid gig-goer or a budding Kurt Cobain, Birmingham is simply ideal for music lovers. Birmingham is home to a rich history of musical growth and is currently buzzing with activity generated by the stream of artists and bands that have lit-up this city with their eclectic output. Whether you treat yourself to sold-out big-name arena concerts at venues such as Arena Birmingham and the Genting Arena or attend the much more affordable low-key gigs in smaller venues around the city, or even if you decide to develop your own burgeoning talent at an open-mic night, for example, Birmingham is for you.

Games
Ensuring that your passion for games is not left-out, Birmingham City Centre has its own Games Workshop, which provides ample space for a great gaming session with you and your friends. Offering full-size game set-ups and play with full-sets for no charge, this may be one to keep in mind. Another to maybe keep in mind is Wayland's Forge. Housed inside the Custard Factory on Gibb Street, Digbeth, Wayland's Forge is a games shop that may seem hidden away. Venture inside though and you will discover a game shop with a massive selection of games for you. It hosts its own events, too.

Volunteering
Maybe this one has never crossed your mind, but imagine doing something with your free-time that is not only interesting but can make a positive difference to someone else's life as well. This is potentially what you can gain from doing a bit of volunteering.

In Birmingham, there are certainly a good amount of chances to give this a go. For students of the University of Birmingham, there are plenty of ways to get involved, with some of the opportunities based within the uni' itself. Other than that, checking out the website of the Birmingham Voluntary Service Council should give you some ideas. The BVSC lend their support to voluntary groups, volunteers and the civil society and have vacancies covering areas as diverse as conservation and youth work, administration and sports.

Our Accommodation

Taking-up a summer let with Unihousing is a terrific opportunity, with the standard of accommodation provided by these registered lettings agents is sure to meet your approval. If you choose to go with Unihousing for one of their summer lets, you have two options: either a house or a studio.

Take one step inside one of our summer let houses and you will be met by the pleasing amount of space that one of these properties offer you. In most cases, the living room areas are bolstered by the inclusion of a TV, great for lazy evenings in watching your favourite programs, and for preparing your own meals, kitchens are also included. Go upstairs and you will come across the bedrooms; which are presentable and spacious.

Some bedrooms are even en-suite, and for those properties that do not have this appealing feature, fitted bathroom or stylish shower/wet rooms are incorporated for your everyday convenience. These properties are fully furnished, double glazed and laminated throughout, and along with their obvious value for money, some are available with a price of rent which also includes utility bills and internet.

Your alternative option is a studio. With this type of accommodation, you are guaranteed a much quieter and simplified tenancy on a day-to-day basis. With a studio, everything except the bathroom is laid-out in front you, making it ideal for those who wish to breeze in-and-out frequently of their summer let, in between frequent trips-out and late nights on the town with friends. Despite their obvious simplicity, these accommodations are not without the typical level of Unihousing quality: generously sized open plan living/sleeping areas, impressive kitchen areas, double glazing, central heating and full furnishings are all part of the package with our studios, and are all part of what makes the summer let experience with us so worthwhile.

Staying Busy in Selly Oak

As mentioned earlier, Selly Oak is a Birmingham town that helps make for a very rewarding spell spent renting accommodation in Birmingham. It is a busy area that is lined with a number of shops and stores. Easy to get to from the situation of Unihousing's summer lets, these Selly Oak shops and stores are able to ensure that your needs for essential items such as food and toiletries are taken care of. To start with, it is stuffed with a number of pubs, each with their own unique character and sense of fun to be found when you are in the mood for a nice beverage or a lovely plate of food for a good price. Wander down when the World Cup 2018 matches are on and get the best seat in the house for all of the action, or head-down with a few mates to have a chat over a round of drinks accompanied by something tasty to tuck in to.

Quality Cuisine and Trips Out

For something a little fancier when it comes to getting a bite to eat, Selly Oak and nearby towns such as Stirchley are home to a selection of restaurants that are more than capable of leaving all customers satisfied. This restaurant range from the more mainstream Frankie & Benny's to the Middle-Eastern style Paprika Grill House and, for the true taste of Birmingham, a collection of mouth-watering balti houses.

Another way in which a Selly Oak summer let enables you to embark on an enjoyable, rewarding break over the summer period is by giving pretty straightforward access to a variety of other locations that are well-worth a visit. Some of these locations are simply a short drive or bus ride from Selly Oak. Kings Heath is one example of these places, and it is somewhere that entices through its combination of independent bohemian charm and high-street efficiency.

Getting Out There

Take the local train to New Street station though, and your options only increase. From here you could quite easily take a quick walk to the delightfully old-fashioned Moor Street station which will convey you to Stratford-upon-Avon, where you can take a stroll around this truly historic part of the country and find out more about its Shakespearean roots. You could maybe even catch an RSC show for yourself, or, on a sunny day, simply get yourself an ice cream and have a leisurely wander through the park.

What's good about Birmingham is that it allows you to easily get to other places like London, Manchester and Liverpool. It's a city that has an accessible central situation relative to the overall length and breadth of the UK, meaning that exploring the country a little more and discovering a whole range of attractions to enrich your time here over the summer is not only simple and convenient but affordable, too.

Starting the Summer

No one out there can really predict the weather, so making the most of the nice weather is an opportunity not to be missed. You've done the exams, you've studied hard and now's your chance to relax.

Before you head off though, here are a few things to think about during the summer months.

Money

Of course, you want to just chill-out and enjoy yourself, but there's no getting away from the fact that money can become a little scarce over this period. With that in mind, it might be a good idea to start thinking ahead as to how you can manage the money you've got over the summer break. If you're planning to live with your parents during the summer period, you will be saving yourself some cash. Whatever your plans are, there are things to give some thought to, like budgeting and perhaps finding a part-time job that could alleviate some of the financial constraints that you might run into over the summer.

Barbecues

When we think of summer, we usually think barbecue. Whether with friends or family, a barbecue can be a fun occasion and a totally delicious dinner. And, to help make your barbecue a little different or to add something extra special, there is a decent amount of info' on the internet about barbecue recipes.

Whatever it is that you choose to do with your barbecue, be sure to be safe:
-Make sure that all frozen meat is completely thawed out prior to being used on the barbecue.

-All perishable ingredients should be kept inside the fridge until ready to be served.

-Wash your hands before handling food and after handling raw meat and fish.

-Don't use plates that have had raw meat or fish on them for ready-to-eat foods, and avoid using cooking utensils for both raw and ready-to-eat foods.

-Get the barbecue to the right temperature before you begin cooking.

-Turn the meat during cooking so that it cooks thoroughly. While you can be less cautious about steaks and lamb chops, you need to be sure that all meats- especially sausages, pork, burgers and chicken- are cooked throughout, and give fish a thorough cooking, too.

-Avoid trailing raw meat and fish overcooked meat and fish that has been cooked, and do not use marinade that is left-over as a sauce.

-Choose a shady place for your food and don't leave food in direct sunlight. Food should not be left out for more than two hours. Also, if you have any left-overs, throwing them away is usually the safest thing to do.

-Also, don't forget to be mindful of standard fire safety principles when it comes to barbecuing.

Sun Cream/Spray

Whilst this may sound more than a little ridiculous, remembering some kind of protection for your skin is important. Whether it's sun cream or the kind that can be sprayed from a bottle, it will stop you from getting burnt. Apart from this being something that's going to guard you against potentially serious skin problems, it will also eliminate the discomfort that comes with sunburn, and means you won't have to keep rubbing on all of that Aftersun lotion.

Planning Ahead

Probably the last thing you want to think about now or over the course of the summer break, but wouldn't be a bad idea, is planning to go back to uni. Ensuring that you have all of the necessary equipment for the course is important, as is making sure you have all of your finances sorted out.

Another aspect of making plans for starting the new academic year that can't be overlooked is getting your student accommodation ready. On the subject of student accommodation, there are a few things to think about. Firstly, you might want to ask yourself whether you are happy staying where you currently are. There are various options out there when it comes to student accommodation, and it might be that there is something available that suits you better than what you have been previously living in. You might find a property that offers all-around better value for money as well as an improved location- giving you a superior student living standard overall.

Birmingham students looking to go back to uni' after the summer are able to seek help finding accommodation from Unihousing.
