How to Help the Environment on a Student Budget

Living sustainably isn't always easy, many changes we could make to our daily habits often involve extra cost, which isn't tenable on a student budget. Of course, we still want to do everything we can to help the environment, which means being thrifty and careful when making purchases. In this blog, we suggest some eco-friendly alternatives to various items that won't break the bank.

Water Bottles

Staying hydrated is important for your health, but buying plastic water bottles is not only bad for the environment, but it can also be more expensive in the long run than buying a reusable water bottle. In th
e UK each year, we use roughly 13 billion plastic water bottles, but 5.5 billion of them will either be littered or end up in a landfill.

For a small investment in a reusable water bottle, you can drink water throughout the day while also helping the environment by disposing of fewer plastic bottles. Plus, you can easily refill your bottle at cafes or fountains in town.

Coffee Cups

Many people enjoy getting a coffee to go from their local cafe, but disposable coffee cups can be damaging to the environment. In the UK, we throw away 2.5 billion disposable coffee cups, and less than 1% of them are actually recycled.

A reusable coffee cup is a cheap investment which will mean that fewer disposable coffee cups are thrown away. You may even save yourself money by making your own coffee at home.

Straws

Straws have been a contentious subject over the last few years. Obviously, plastic straws are horrible for the environment, however, they are more structurally sound than the paper straws you can get from takeaways.

The answer? Buy your own set of metal or bamboo straws. Metal straws will last you a very long time, and many come with a cleaning brush to help keep them clean. On the other side, bamboo straws are more structurally sound than paper straws and can be composted when they eventually wear out but can be more expensive.

Shopping Bags

Using plastic bags is a completely avoidable problem. Most supermarkets offer a reusable bag for life, or you can buy a fabric tote bag from stationery shops. Not only are these better for the environment, but they're also able to hold much more during your shop.

Teabags

Not many people know that a lot of teabags contain plastic, which helps hold the teabag together. This also means that the teabag doesn't decompose after use. It's worth spending some time researching plastic-free teabags or instead, making the change to loose leaf tea.

Cotton Pads

Cotton pads are useful to have around for removing makeup and general cleansing, but many aren't biodegradable and are just thrown away. Washable cotton pads are available online and are reused easily.

Wrapping Paper

The effect that wrapping paper has on the environment is insidious, as many of us believe that it's just paper. However, a lot of it is backed with a type of plastic or has plastic glitter over it, which means it's can't be fully recycled and doesn't decompose.

As an alternative, why not use brown paper? You can even decorate it by writing on the paper or using a paper label. This is better for the environment and can create a more personal feel when giving presents.

How Student Nights In Can Be Fun Nights In

Going out is not always affordable. Here are some student ways to stay occupied when staying in, and you never know, it could become a regular thing!

Games Tournament

Whatever your preferred choice of game or games console, you’re sure to find something you and your friends can all agree to play together and make into a tournament-style competition. Playing in pairs or simply as solo entrants, this could be a lively way to pass the time.

Film Night

Watching films in the evening isn’t out of the ordinary, but arranging a viewing around a particular theme or concept could be a nice change. Watch great films, hilariously bad films, or all films of a trilogy or series, there are many possibilities. And you won’t be paying cinema prices to do so either.

BBQ/Bring n Share Meal

If it’s feasible to do and you have the skills, doing a barbecue might be just the thing for you and your uni’ mates. Alternatively, a simple bring and share of snacks is a great way to get everybody together. You’re bound to get a variety of food brought along, and it will be cheaper than going to a restaurant too.

Theme Party

While parties are pretty typical, the theme for your party doesn’t have to be. While you could choose some sort of entertaining or imaginative theme, something funny is sure to please everyone. Get creative with lights or decorations if you wish, add in some bold choices of food and some games, and you could end up with a night to remember.

What Life is Like in a Selly Oak Studio or House

Student Studios

You Come First

The most obvious starting point when thinking about living in a student studio is the freedom it gives you. Renting a student studio means that you live independently and as such, can be yourself in your space day-in-day-out. For a new student who is living away from home for the first time, this could be the ideal way to ease themselves slowly and gently into this whole new phase of life. Independent living in a student studio is a quiet and relaxed choice and may come as a relief for those individuals that relish a relatively tranquil break from all the busy goings-on of the university and their accommodation’s surrounding area.

By placing yourself in a Birmingham student studio, you can enjoy being free from having to make all of the compromises that are a part of living with other students. In addition, you don’t have to worry about having to deal with conflicting ideas of home hygiene and tidiness; you can be as messy or as clean as you like because you’re the only person to see it.

Independent Lifestyle

Interestingly though, studios are also suitable for those who are focused on making the most out of all of the opportunities for socialising, parties and general get-togethers that uni’ life might present. The reason? It’s because life in a student studio is so streamlined and simple; you have a bed, other quality furnishings and then your bathroom in a separate room.

It’s so straightforward that you can just breeze in and out when you like, with the studio acting as more of a base than anything else. And of course, due to this type of student home being so simple, it’s super easy to maintain and therefore the perfect match for this kind of lifestyle.

Student Houses

Community Living

It could be said that all of that freedom and independence could make you feel a little lonely sometimes. Some might suggest as well that being in a student studio maybe doesn’t give you the full university experience that comes with living with other students because it doesn’t create the same kind of socialising and fun that sharing a house can. And while a student studio is easy to manage, you may not like having to clean just the small space that you have, whereas cleaning duties can be shared in a house with others.

For those who are new to living away from home, renting a student house can be great as it means that with other tenants around you there is less chance of feeling lonely. It can be a real comfort to have others around you who might be experiencing a similar situation and with who you can build friendships.

There are practical advantages as well when going for a student house. One of them is that bills can be shared. Also, you have other students close by who can help with cleaning, buying food, cooking etc.

Where We Come In

The “We” here refers to us- Unihousing. Unihousing is a Birmingham based letting agency, that Selly Oak students have relied on over many years for quality accommodation. For Selly Oak accommodation, the Unihousing team are the people to go to, ensuring you first-rate value for money as well as housing that is modern, comfortable and homely with superb locations.

Student houses through Unihousing are without question tailor-made for the student experience. We provide university housing that offers undeniable convenience for you and the students that you are living with. To do this we have ensured that the kitchen is furnished to a sufficient modern standard to make preparing all meals from something light to something a little more challenging and interesting a slick, straightforward process. Also, downstairs you will discover fridge freezers, and to become the centrepiece of all evening fun and entertainment, there is a spacious lounge complete with sofas and a TV.

The upstairs is similarly well-prepared for the day-to-day lifestyle of the modern student. We have provided our student houses with roomy and tastefully decorated bedrooms, some of which feature en-suite bathrooms. Our bedrooms boast wardrobes as well as double beds, and upstairs you will also find at least a shower room so you can quickly and easily get up and ready for the day ahead when it suits you.

Unihousing studios for students are an impressive choice for a quieter place to call ‘home’ during the uni’ years. Although a simple space for student accommodation, our student studios are well-sized and exude a smart, sleek look. Brilliantly situated in Selly Oak Birmingham with quick access to the university, pubs, public transport and a range of shops, our studios are comfortably furnished and are equipped with a kitchenette for handy meal prep’ along with a double bed and TV. There is a functional separate bathroom that comprises a shower or bath, toilet, sink and heated towel rail, plus, to allow you to get on with your assignments and exam revision we have added a convenient desk for your studies.

Why Birmingham Student Houses and Studios Are Cost-Effective Must-Haves

When costs pile up, so does the pressure on you. All of us have experienced this feeling before to some degree, but when you are living away from home as an independent student, having the sense that your finances are getting seriously stretched can be very stressful. As a means of side-stepping unnecessary difficulties regarding your finance, it is wise to look at your student accommodation to calculate how much money you will be handing over and what your regular costs will be like.

With accommodation in Birmingham, you can be sure to get a good deal with a letting agency UoB students can rely on such as Unihousing. Choosing a reliable provider for your student accommodation means you can proceed through your student living experience managing costs comfortably and making the most of the time in your student home.

Student Houses

Birmingham student houses with Unihousing are handsomely prepared places to get settled for your time at university. Of course, you can share this student accommodation with a group of buddies, making for time away from the university that is never dull. Unihousing accommodation is also very affordable for students at university. Sharing a house means you can spread the cost of most expenses.

Now that you have added that into your financial planning it’s time to turn your attention to other things that needed to be budgeted for. To start with, think about essential items that you will need every day, such as plates, bowls and cutlery; a trip to Ikea should be enough for this. Supermarkets also sell homeware items. A plate at Tesco for example can be bought for as little as £1!

Speaking of supermarkets, food shopping is one of the biggest areas of budgeting that you are likely to come across as a student. What might be the best course of action you take here is to do a little research, perhaps online, and compare prices of different supermarkets. Have a look at what food can be bought in larger quantities to save money, maybe avoid branded items and maybe share meal costs with your housemates if suitable.

Student Studios

Living in a student studio is a different experience than a shared house. As a student renting a studio, there’s a greater sense of independence to be had. For some, this may sound like more of an isolated way to live, but others may prefer the quiet and overall simplicity of being in this kind of accommodation. In many ways though, having a clear and sensible approach to handling costs are still essential.

Choosing a studio from Unihousing’s Selly Oak accommodation will mean that, for starters, you will receive your 100Mb broadband included in the price of rent as well as your utility bills. This is obviously in contrast to renting a student house and will shape your budgeting considerably. In addition, we sometimes have offers on our studios for low or no deposit.

When looking at cost-effectiveness at budgeting, travel expenses need to be considered. Not only do you need to factor in the cost of getting to and from uni, but you also need to plan for the cost of travel elsewhere. What makes our student studios easier on your bank balance is the fact that they are a short distance from shops, supermarkets, and the university itself, which reduces travelling for you. As well as all that, there are nearby public transport links to get you to the City Centre and other places of interest that are both affordable and efficient.

Another thing to remember is that while budgeting and sorting through costs may seem difficult, you can also make use of the various discounts that are out there to help you make a saving or two. Student Beans is a good place to start in your search for student discounts. There’s Unidays as well, and Save The Student have some good info about how to save money, too. It’s not just student discounts that are worth being aware of though, as some other deals and savings will crop up from time to time in various shops and other places to help make your financial situation just a little bit brighter.

8 Reasons to Choose a Selly Oak Studio with Unihousing

With the new year in full swing, it is never too soon to start looking for a student property for the next academic year. Though you may not have to make a decision right away, the longer you put it off, the less likely you are to find accommodation that suits your wants and needs.

One of our most popular types of student accommodation is our modern, fully fitted studios. For someone who is seeking their own private space that is close to the University of Birmingham, one of our studios could be a great option for you. Still unsure if a studio with Unihousing is right for you? Have a look at our list below to see some of the reasons why a studio could be a good fit!

1. Privacy and Quiet

One of the main benefits of renting a studio with Unihousing is the privacy you will receive. Though there are perks with living in shared houses, it can be tricky with cleaning rotas, personal space and different lifestyles. Our studios offer an open plan living area, with a spacious double bed, food prep area, ensuite bathroom and a desk/revising space.

By having your own private space, you have more freedom to go about your daily life without any disruptions, schedule clashes, or cleaning rota stress. You will also have the freedom to invite friends into your space when you want, instead of being surrounded by people at the times when you may just want to be alone.

2. Modern Fittings and Spacious Interiors

Unihousing’s student studios are modern, up to date and contain all of the amenities you could need. Many of our studios have been newly refurbished and are maintained regularly to ensure they are up to date.

Our fully furnished studios include a fresh, stylish ensuite bathroom with modern fittings and other amenities including a quiet fridge/freezer, hobs, electric oven and a washer/dryer. Your desk area will also have a flat-screen TV for your personal use and high-speed internet will also be included.

3. Brilliant Location

All of our studios are ideally located in the student village of Selly Oak. Here you will find many necessary and desirable shopping and food hot spots including cafes, restaurants, pubs, clubs, varied takeout, a local gym and parks in the surrounding area. With supermarkets and a large shopping centre located close by, you will surely find everything you need throughout your stay in Selly Oak.

4. Easy Transport around Birmingham and Beyond

Selly Oak is not only populated with shops, entertainment and various food hotspots, but it also has a great transportation system. With a local train station and bus lines into the city centre and around Birmingham, Selly Oak has access to the majority of the city, including Aston University and Birmingham City University. A quick trip to the centre will also then give you access to other cities you can visit and explore.

If you want to discover more in Birmingham, the historical Harborne, Moseley village and Kings Heath are worth checking out. With even more entertainment, culture and amazing food, you will surely never have a dull moment as a student. You will also be eligible to various student discounts for shops and travel including bus passes and railcards, which will come in handy with your travels.

5. Closely Located to the University of Birmingham

Though this might not be the biggest consideration for some students, the distance from your accommodation to your campus can have a massive impact on your student life. All of our studios are within walking distance to the University of Birmingham, which means that you can get to all of your lectures and classes with ease. This could save you not only time and energy, but money too as you wouldn’t need to spend anything on transport.

6. Dedicated Team of Professionals

Unihousing is one of the top student landlords in Selly Oak, with years of experience and a team that will provide support whenever possible. All common areas in the student complex are regularly cleaned by our wonderful cleaning team, while any studio maintenance is dealt with by our dedicated maintenance team as well. This allows us to tend to any issues that could arise quickly and effectively.

7. Bills and High-Speed Broadband Included in Monthly Rent

There frequently are hidden costs when renting a property, which can cause problems for tenants down the road. To make the process easier and more cost-effective for our students, we include utility bills and high-speed 100Mb broadband into the price of the rent. This way you won’t be caught up with various setup fees, paperwork and confusion regarding bills.

This will also allow you to create a more fool-proof budget for yourself, as you will know the exact monthly costs in advance. Our high-speed internet is great for streaming, gaming and studying throughout your year at University.

8. Low Deposits and Flexible Contract Deals (Limited Offers)

At Unihousing we frequently offer low and even no deposits for our student studios, to make the process a bit easier and more affordable. Additionally, we also offer flexible contract lengths for many of our properties, which will allow tenants to start and end their tenancy when it best suits them. Have a look at our website to find out more about our current offers.

Tips to Help You Stay on Top of Your Mental Health

Tips to Help You Stay on Top of Your Mental Health

Taking care of our mental health has taken on new importance for many of us. For many of us, the realities of COVID-19 have massively impacted our mental wellbeing. Staying on top of self-care and ensuring you are looking after yourself and your mental health is extremely important.

But if you can spot the early signs of your mental health declining, you will be able to take action and find help before you begin to feel overwhelmed. Here are some tips to help keep your mind and body balanced throughout the remainder of 2020 and into 2021!

Trying to Squeeze in Daily Exercise

One of the hardest things to do when you are feeling stressed and struggling with your mental health is exercise. It can be so daunting to even consider attempting a quick walk, or an exercise routine. Particularly in the winter months, this can become even harder.

As difficult as it may be to get in the zone, staying physically active in whatever form you chose, will help clear your mind and give your brain a little rest and reset. For some, this could be taking a short run, home exercises or trying a little yoga. For others, simply taking a walk could be very helpful in keeping you grounded and giving yourself a chance to breathe in the fresh air.

If committing to a long-form of exercise feels like too much pressure, try finding a short exercise or yoga class online that could only take you 5 minutes! Even attempting short exercise bursts could help trick your brain into wanting to exercise more frequently.

Self-care

This is something that can commonly be overlooked. For some, trying out holistic self-care could be extremely beneficial. This could include meditation/mindfulness, pampering, using essential oils or having relaxing baths.

There are extensive amounts of research showing how holistic self-care can positively improve your mental health. Meditation/mindfulness, essential oils and bath salts have been shown to relax your body, mind and muscles, which then helps to relieve stress and raise your mood.

For others, self-care could simply be checking in with yourself, or doing an activity that rejuvenates you. This could be reading a book, writing, doing a jigsaw puzzle, listening to music or a podcast or even creating something. Hobbies are also a brilliant way to increase and promote good mental health.

When you are doing activities that inspire and interest you, your brain has a chance to bounce out of that negative headspace. Connecting with yourself in a way that relaxes and soothes your anxiety and low moods will have a positive effect on your mental health and wellbeing.

Keeping Track of Your Social Media Usage

For many of us, social media has become a very big part of our life. There are some real positives to having platforms where you can express yourself, be creative, communicate with family and friends and get inspired. The trouble comes when you look up from your device and hours have passed.

There is beauty in balance. Make sure you are giving yourself time away from social media and screens in general. This will help your brain rest and process your daily activities and experiences. Social media can be an amazing tool, but when it is overused, it can have a very negative impact on your mental health and general wellbeing.

Too much social media or negative interactions through social media could also create high-stress levels, making you feel anxious within your daily life. Try to listen to your mind and body and figure out when things cross a line from pleasurable, to damaging.

Getting Plenty of Sleep

This is something we have heard since we were little, but getting enough sleep is a massive factor in how well we can function day to day or week to week. The hours we lose at night can impact how focused we are and how well we deal with everyday struggles and frustrations. Getting less sleep can cause extra stress and worry to begin building up, affecting our mental wellbeing.

Having an evening routine could also help your body get used to sleeping at a certain time. If you struggle to fall asleep in general, try reading a book before bed, instead of looking at your screens. You could also try herbal teas or yoga before bed, to help calm your mind so that it isn’t going crazy all night.

Asking for Help

When you are struggling with your mental health, it can feel extremely lonely. Yet it can also seem easier to isolate yourself and stay away from the people around you that care. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. There are people around who want to give you their love and support when you need it most.

Try reaching out to family and friends that you can count on, who can support you through your low periods. Particularly in the winter months, many of us are more likely to feel low due to the lack of sun and the shorter days. Daily life in a pandemic is also likely to negatively affect your mental health, as many of us are feeling isolated from the rest of the world.

You can also reach out to your university. Now more than ever, universities are making it a priority to have staff who can support students struggling with mental health. There are on-site wellbeing support services who can help, particularly if you feel other’s will not understand.

Additionally, there are a range of organisations you can contact if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Health professionals are also there to support you, so don’t be afraid to reach out.

The truth is, not everyone can fully grasp what struggling with your mental health can look like in everyday life. But people are getting better and better at understanding and listening. Try to communicate with friends and family and help them understand what you need in those low times so that they can effectively support you through it.

The most important thing to remember is that you are not alone. The first step is to reach out. As difficult as it may be, it is the first step to getting support.

What Unihousing can Offer You

Maintaining our mental health is extremely important and remembering that there are thousands of other students who are experiencing similar things can be very helpful. It's important that you stay on top of your stress management and don't leave the important things until the last minute.

Sorting out your accommodation needs for 2021 is a great way of reducing stress levels. By having your accommodation ready, you can focus on the things that matter. Unihousing is proud to offer a variety of student accommodation to satisfy your needs. Whether you are looking to house share or live solo, we are here to help. Find out how we can help you.

Unihousing: Finding Student Accommodation in Selly Oak

The 20/21 student experience is very different than it has been in previous years. With the current state of the pandemic and the world on high alert, it can be nerve-racking to think about future decisions. The important thing to remember is that your university experience can still be something special.

The new year not only brings a fresh start but also a big boom of students trying to find housemates and accommodation solutions for the next academic year. It’s good to start thinking about your preferences early so you have a better chance of finding what you want. Here are a few things to start thinking of now before your search options become limited.

Location and Travel Options

Many students want to live close to their university, to make their experience easier to manage. By eliminating a commute, you will profit from extra time in the mornings and in the evenings, which can hugely benefit your mental health and social life as well. It's also cheaper to walk into university than to take public transport.

All of our student accommodation is located right in Selly Oak, within walking distance to the University of Birmingham. This means that you can not only save time but money too. The cost of daily travel can add up very quickly, so choosing local accommodation can save you a lot of inconvenience in the long run.

Deciding on Your Budget

You must be aware of your budget and know what you can afford. This will make choosing your accommodation significantly easier. For some, living in a shared house could prove to be a cheaper alternative. You could save not only on rent but also on general shopping costs if you and your housemates decide to share the costs of meals and cleaning supplies.

On the other hand, our studios and twodios can also be a really good option for people seeking independence. Though they do tend to be more expensive than shared houses, Unihousing prides itself on offering fair prices and value for money. Just like shared houses, staying in a twodio can also provide opportunities to share expenses and safe money in the long run.

Finding a Trusted Letting Agent

One of the most important things to look out for is finding a letting agent that is fair and trustworthy. Always pay attention to reviews and listen out for recommendations. Unihousing is one of the most well-reviewed registered-landlords in Selly Oak and holds a strong track record in providing properties that satisfy the needs of students and professionals.

We have an excellent team of professionals who are passionate about finding you accommodation that would best suit your needs, ensuring you feel supported throughout the process. With a responsive maintenance team, we are also able to deal quickly and efficiently with any problems that may arise in your accommodation. By looking at our website, you will be able to find out more about Unihousing, our team and the extensive list of properties we provide.

Exploring the Local Area and Amenities

For many students coming in from other cities, the area they live in is extremely important. Many students want to have a diversity of shops, food hotspots and places to explore throughout their time at university. Selly Oak is a brilliant place for students who want all of their needs met locally. With its variety of pubs, clubs, cafes, shops and parks it truly is the ideal student village.

Additionally, the bus systems and train station are highly developed, with easy access into the bustling Birmingham City Centre and other well-known villages such as Kings Heath and Harborne. Students will never run out of exciting places to explore and new restaurants and cafes to try out.

Choosing Shared or Solo Living

It's worth knowing what type of accommodation you are interested in, before starting your search. Every student will be different with their own needs and expectations. If you can decide on the kind of accommodation you desire, the process will run much smoother when the time comes.

As most students will have spent their first year in halls, the second year is the perfect time for you to be selfish about what kind of living experience you want for the upcoming student year. You should have a good idea if you want to share with many or few people, or whether you want to be completely independent instead.

Some students cannot even imagine living fully on their own and seek the community that shared living brings. The positive thing about shared houses and accommodation in your second year is the fact that you can pick your housemates and find people who you trust and who you think would make great housemates.

For others, it could be extremely refreshing to live on their own in a studio or twodio. Our Selly Oak studios/flats are fully fitted with all the necessities a student would need including a double bedroom, ensuite bathroom and well-sized living space. Though many studios will have a shared general kitchen, each will have their own food prep area with separate storage, where students can store and cook most of their meals if they want.

Each studio also consists of a double bed, desk and chair, quiet fridge freezer, a flat-screen TV, 100Mb broadband and central heating. This provides students with a place for both effective study and relaxation.

Whatever direction you decide to go in, Unihousing will help you find the ideal living situation to suit your needs and budget. Our team are devoted to support you through the accommodation process and make sure you are satisfied with the outcome. Check out our available properties here.
