Older residents in Selly Oak are claiming that if any more student accommodation is planned for the village, then it’ll be at risk of becoming an extension of the University of Birmingham campus. There have been recent planning rules put into place to limit the changing of family homes into student accommodation, however these conversions have continued in the area relentlessly.
Selly Oak’s Community Partnership
are calling for a review across the entire city of student accommodation, due
to fears that all development is being concentrated in the village. They would
also like a stop to all major developments until the review has finished.
This review has come about due to
plans for a five storey apartment block being given the green light. This block
would be for up to 70 students on Bristol Road, and is the latest large accommodation
for students given approval.
A spokesman for the Partnership
has stated that the current policy for the accommodation of students at Birmingham’s
universities is to place it in Selly Oak. As pointed out by the spokesman,
there are a large number of student houses, flats, rooms and studios still
available in the area. He goes on to say that no more student accommodation is
needed, and that plenty of properties are being advertised in the local area.
After being told that the plan to
demolish a row of shops along Bristol Road and build a five storey block met
with proper policy guidelines, the planning committee voted in favour of this
by ten to two. This was met negatively by most of the community members. One councillor
said that they would be asking her cabinet colleagues that are responsible for
housing and development, to produce a full review.
