Student Accommodation and Live Stand-Up Comedy

Make the average student day that little bit better by injecting it with a dose of laughter. Especially welcome on an evening by yourself or to finish off a long and tiring day of lectures and studying, watching some stand-up comedy live is a great night out, a great way to let off some steam and a lot of fun. If you're a Birmingham student, the good news here is that there are a number of ways for you to catch a stand-up show live. And some of them shouldn't cost you too much, either.

It's also worth mentioning that if you're a student that has given some thought to where they will be living next year, then it is a good idea to browse Unihousing's student accommodation. Including both student studios and houses that are affordably priced, Unihousing's Birmingham student accommodation is a high-standard solution to the search for student housing.

What Fat Penguin?

There's a place in Moseley called Fat Penguin Comedy Club. Here you can see an exciting line-up of acts performing at the Patrick Kavanagh pub, on 142 Trafalgar Road. Some of the upcoming performers at Fat Penguin include Darren Harriott who has taken the stage on Live at the Apollo and Ninia Benjamin, star of BBC Three's 3 Non- Blondes. There is, strictly speaking, no entrance fee for these gigs, but there is the recommended donation of £5 for these shows, so it should be a good fit for the average student budget.

Glee...Another Word For Joy

To get a taste of what some of the bigger names in comedy are doing right now, you could give The Glee Club a try. Situated inside The Arcadian, Hurst Street in Birmingham City Centre, the Glee is a venue that also hosts other non-comedy acts on its stage such as musical performers and spoken-word performers. The Glee Club has welcomed a strong selection of artists through its doors over the years. You can expect to see such mirth-merchants as Paul Foot, Zoe Lyons and Dane Baptiste making crowds howl with laughter over the coming months.

Even Bigger

Also, in case you weren't already aware, there are some large scale venues in Birmingham like the Genting Arena and Arena Birmingham, and it's where some of the giants of stand-up comedy such as Chris Rock and Kevin Hart have been up on stage. But of course, tickets for these shows are unsurprisingly more expensive so it might be that you put some cash aside and save-up if you are intent on seeing one of these arena-sized shows.

Comedy Station

Another way for you and your mates to see some quality stand-up at prices that are good for your student budget, is to get yourself tickets to one of the Comedy Junction at The Station gigs. The Station is located in Sutton Coldfield, and you can take your seat here to see stand-up comedians that you might know and some that you might not know. Definitely, something to think about.

Improv'

Yes, improv' isn't exactly stand-up comedy, but if you're seeking out something live that's going to give you a good giggle, then it makes sense to point-out that Birmingham also features it's own improv' groups. One of these is known as Box of Frogs. Dealing in a zany and energetic brand of improvised comedy, Box of Frogs put on shows as well as “Jam Nights”. Taking place on every third Monday of each month, these nights are where a visiting group performs, and if you're in the mood for some laugh-filled silliness, you can get involved in the action, too!

Describing itself as “The UK's First Diverse Improv Theatre Company”, Jumprov have been creating their distinctively funny improvised shows for some time, and you can catch them in the act live at the Birmingham Improv Festival. The festival runs from 26th October to 3rd November. So have a look online to find out more about this one-of-a-kind event!
